The question
What can a week outside the usual loop make possible?
An interesting group does not automatically become a good room. People need a reason to be there, a way to begin and enough freedom to contribute something of their own.
BHX is an ongoing exploration of that space: bringing people from different kinds of work together without turning the week into a conference or a sequence of pitches.
What we designed
The residency combines a shared home, structured exchanges, smaller conversations and time that is deliberately left open.
The place matters, but it is not the entire proposition. The mix of people, the rhythm of the days and the way participation is invited all shape the experience.
Some people arrive with a project. Some with a question. Others want distance from a routine that has become too familiar. The format gives those different starting points somewhere to meet.
A few decisions behind the experience
Curate for a room, not a guest list.
An impressive biography tells you only part of what someone might bring. Curiosity, generosity, difference and the willingness to participate matter too. The aim is not a room of identical people with impressive titles; it is a mix that can make the week interesting for one another.
Give conversations more than one setting.
A group exchange, a conversation over a meal and a one-to-one walk are not interchangeable. Different settings let different people enter the experience. The programme should not reward only the person who is quickest to speak in a circle.
Leave room inside the structure.
A full schedule can look valuable on paper while leaving little space to absorb anything. Shared time needs some openness. Not every conversation needs an agenda, a facilitator or an output at the end.
What the format is for
BHX is designed to make space for better questions, useful exchanges and relationships that can continue beyond the residency.
People come to BHX for different reasons. A useful next step, a conversation that stays with them or simply some distance from the usual routine can each make the week worthwhile.
What this taught me
The programme and the people should make room for each other.
Structure helps an experience begin. But the host should not become the only source of energy, meaning or conversation. Part of the craft is knowing when to intervene—and when the room is already doing something worth leaving alone.
